BEDFORD & DISTRICT HANDICAPPED RIDERS ASSN.

Bedford and District Handicapped Riders Association (BDHRA) was formed over 53 years ago and provides horse riding as therapy to disabled children and adults in Bedfordshire. Receiving no state funding they exist entirely from donations and charitable gifting. Over the course of a year approximately 113 children and adults enjoy the benefits of riding. It strengthens the core enabling children who may be confined to a wheelchair to sit for longer periods, it lengthens muscles which helps prevents spasms and also becomes a social life for people who find access to sport more difficult. Sometimes it takes three volunteers to help a rider – one to lead the horse and two to assist either side. Last year, the BDHRA received the Queens Award for Voluntary Services – the highest accolade for charitable causes.
